How did you get into SUP racing?
I learned to windsurf as a kid and became obsessed with windsurfing as an adult. When I first saw standup paddleboarding I thought it looked boring, but when I tried it myself I liked it a lot. I mostly did surf-style SUP until late summer 2014 when I saw one of the CGT Imperial River races while walking my dog in Riverside Park. I knew I had to try racing, so I practiced a couple times on my 11'8" sup-windsurf hybrid and did the last two races of the summer race series on that. After that I was hooked and bought a 14' race sup to be more competitive. I started to get good results and joined the race team in spring 2015.
SUP Racing Goals:
I'd like to get a few tenths of a mph faster and build my high-intensity endurance so I can mix it up with the top amateurs in my age group at some of the bigger races in Florida. I also want to improve my skills at maintaining speed and efficiency in rough and windy conditions like we get at some of the out-of-town races.
I do workout paddles about 3 times per week, with distances of 2 - 5 miles. I sometimes do calisthenics and jogging on days that I'm not paddling. Of course whenever it's windy I go windsurfing. I usually paddle in the Imperial River because I can walk to it from my house, but sometimes I paddle in the Gulf of Mexico to get rough water practice for ocean races. Most of my training has been steady-pace paddling, but I'm taking the advice of others on the CGT team and trying to incorporate more "interval" training with mixed intensities and distances.
I have a blog about sup, windsurfing, and other stuff- http://jimbodouglass.blogspot.com
